Funeral Service
Funeral services for Ruby Skoglund, 88, Lake Norden, were held Sunday, October 10, at the Evangelical Covenant Church, Lake Norden, with Pastor Joe Turrill officiating. She died Thursday, Oct 7, 2010 at the Golden Living Center in Lake Norden. Mrs. Skoglund was born Oct 13, 1921, to Harry and Irene (Christensen) Hoglund at rural Lake Norden. She attended school and graduated from Lake Norden High School. She attended Eastern State Teacher's College at Madison and taught all eight grades at Cleveland #1 county school. During World War II, she worked for three years building airplane engines at a factory in Chicago. She married George Skoglund on September 8, 1945. They lived and raised their family in Lake Norden. She worked at Holger's Corner Service grocery store for many years and then at the Lake Norden Care Center as a secretary. She loved her large family and spending time with them, her friends, watching baseball, playing cards and gardening. She was very involved with her church, the Evangelical Covenant Church, and loved the Lord. She belonged to the Friendly Circle Club, Covenant Women, and taught Sunday school for many years. She was a wonderful hostess and everyone was welcome in her home, including the dozens of farmers who enjoyed her baked goods at the annual Pioneer Days.Survivors include her children, Dianne of Sioux Falls, Linda (Burt) Tulson of Lake Norden, David (Kathi) of Sioux Falls, Dean (Nancy) of Bruce; nine grandchildren; three great grandchildren; brother, Gene (Helen) Hoglund of Lake Norden; and sisters, JoAnn (Ken) Mattheis of Sioux Falls, Janet (Al) Johnson and Shirley (John) Larson both of Lake Norden; her brothers-in-law, Don (Ruthie) Skoglund of Lake Norden, and Chuck Warren of Chandler, AZ; her sisters-in-law, Shirley Skoglund of Lake Norden and Dorothy Skoglund of Thief River Falls, MN. She was preceded in death by her husband, George, and her sister, Carol Warren. Memorials may be directed to the Lake Norden Baseball Association or the Evangelical Covenant Church. Funeral Service
Brad Nielson, 60, of Lake Norden died of cancer Tuesday, January 18, 2011, in a care center at Lake Norden. Funeral services were held Saturday, January 22, at 2pm in the Covenant Church at Lake Norden. Geise Funeral Home of Estelline was in charge of arrangements. Brad was born April 18, 1950, in Watertown, the son of Red and Fern Nielson. He attended Lincoln Elementary School and Madison High School. He then attended Huron Presbyterian College on a presidential scholarship where he majored in theology and hoped to one day become a pastor. He later moved back to Madison where he spent the majority of his life. He enjoyed playing sports as a child. He earned trophies from diving, tennis, shooting marbles, baseball, track, but most of all he enjoyed basketball. As a sophomore in high school, he started as a guard on the varsity team. He also enjoyed his family, friends, his band, playing jazz on the piano, being in school plays and played the tuba in the S.D. All-State Band for several years. Survivors include three brothers, Jay (Silvia) of Atlanta, Bruce of San Diego and Terry (Nenne) of San Diego: one sister, Julie (Bob) Severson of Lake Norden.
